A social media political commentator, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, has been found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kano State.
The circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of the time of filing this report, but the incident has triggered calls for an immediate investigation by the authorities.
Former Kano State governor and opposition politician, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, raised the alarm in a post on X on Tuesday, alleging that Dan Shagamu was found in a pool of blood at his home.
Kwankwaso said: “I am deeply disturbed by the killing of the renowned social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was found today in a pool of his blood at his home in Kano. Dan Shagamu was brutally slaughtered in a horrific attack.”
He urged the Kano State Government to constitute an investigative panel to probe the incident and bring those responsible to justice.
Kwankwaso added: “Should the authorities fail to take decisive and transparent action, the incoming NDC Government will, upon assumption of office, launch a full investigation and take all necessary steps to hold those responsible accountable.”
He also called on the state and Federal Governments to protect opposition voices from threats and attacks, stressing that freedom of expression is guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.
Amnesty International Nigeria also condemned the reported killing and called for a thorough investigation.
In a statement shared on its social media platforms, the organisation said Dan Shagamu was found in a pool of blood at his residence in Gaida.
It urged the authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that anyone suspected of involvement was brought to justice.
“In a democracy, outspoken persons or critics are accommodated, listened to, not killed,” Amnesty International said.
The organisation also expressed concern over what it described as reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the elections.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Husaini Mai Riga, described the incident as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable.”
Mai Riga, in a statement, said the incident raised concerns about press freedom, public safety and democratic values in the state.
He called on the Kano State Government and security agencies to immediately investigate the circumstances surrounding the death, identify those responsible and prosecute anyone found culpable in accordance with the law.
The NDC chairman also urged the authorities to strengthen security measures for journalists across the state, saying they should be able to perform their professional duties without fear or intimidation.
According to him, journalists play a vital role in informing the public, promoting accountability and strengthening democracy.
Mai Riga urged journalists and members of the public to remain calm while calling for justice for Dan Shagamu.
He expressed condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues, friends and the wider journalism community, praying for the repose of his soul.
