Ex-Davis Cup star set to host new national tennis tourney in Lagos

The Nigeria Oil and Gas Industry Games began in earnest Monday with preliminary matches in sports like Volleyball, Chess, Scrabble, Tennis and Table tennis held at Package 'B' of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

A former Nigerian number one tennis player and Davis Cup star, Destiny Ford Da-Silva, is set to host a new national tennis championship in Lagos, with a total prize purse of ₦30 million naira across several categories.

The Destiny Ford Da-Silva Foundation will host the Destiny Da-Silva Tennis Open Championship from 13-21 November, 2026, at the tennis section of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The week-long championship is expected to bring together some of Nigeria’s leading tennis players from across the country and will feature Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles, Wheelchair Men’s and Women’s Singles and Doubles, and Men’s Veterans Singles.

The Men’s and Women’s Singles champions will receive ₦1.5 million naira each, while the remaining prize money will be distributed across all the participating categories.

The Organisers also announced a ₦30,000 subsidy allowance for all the main draw players for the duration of the championship.

Players are expected to register through their respective State Tennis Associations ahead of the qualifying rounds, which are scheduled to begin on Friday, 13 November.

The Main Draw will commence on Monday, 16 November, with the championship running until 21 November.

The tournament represents a major new investment in Nigeria’s domestic tennis calendar and is expected to attract players from different parts of the country to the National Stadium in Lagos.
