Nigerian lady reveals mistake behind her UK global talent visa application rejection

A Nigerian lady, Dinma Aniugbo, has shared how a mistake in her first application for the UK Global Talent Visa led to her rejection before she corrected it and secured an endorsement on her second attempt.

Aniugbo said she initially believed that simply presenting her achievements and evidence would be enough to convince endorsers of her eligibility.

According to her, she listed several impressive accomplishments in her first application but failed to provide sufficient context and measurable results to demonstrate the impact of her work.

“I made one big mistake when I applied for the UK Global Talent Visa and I got rejected. But after I fixed it and I reapplied, I got endorsed just a few weeks later,” she said.

She explained that she later realised that the people assessing her application did not know her personally, her industry or the significance of her achievements.

“I just expected that the endorsers would somehow understand why all the things I shared were so impressive. And that was my mistake,” Aniugbo said.

She said she changed her approach when submitting her second application by ensuring that each piece of evidence clearly demonstrated why she stood out in her field.

Aniugbo noted that, rather than simply presenting her earnings as proof of being a high earner, she compared her salary with the average earnings for people in similar roles and locations.

“If I said I was a high earner, I didn’t just show my salary. I showed the average salary for my role and location, compared it to mine and showed exactly why mine stood out,” she explained.

According to her, the key lesson was to clearly demonstrate impact instead of expecting assessors to make connections between different pieces of evidence themselves.

“I basically stopped expecting them to figure out my impact and I started showing it,” she said.
